Sports coverage during H&FSM’s first year
If being active is your goal, there is no shortage of recreational sports/fitness activities for you to choose. Maybe you want to do some mountain biking, or perhaps indoor rock climbing is more your speed. Along with old favorites like cycling and running, activities ranging from adventure racing to paintball are now vying for your time.
When the first issue of Health & Fitness Sports Magazine – then simply “Health & Fitness Magazine” – appeared in September 1985, the recreational sports landscape in Houston was devoid of the multitude of sporting disciplines we’re familiar with today. Let’s take a look at how the magazine covered sports and recreation during its first year of life.

A guy in a blue Ford pick up cranes his neck as he slows to take a look while I pumped gas into the sleek convertible. “What year is that?” he shouts. “Man, that’s a nice lookin’ car.”
Such scenes become commonplace when you’re tooling around town in the 2010 Infiniti G37 convertible. This is a car for people who like to get noticed, but it’s also a car for drivers who appreciate a luxury sport coupe with sports car handling and impeccably solid fit and finish.

Kim Kouwabunpat
Kim Kouwabunpat is the quintessential California girl: Stanford graduate, reality TV veteran, fit, full of life and a die-hard fan of the NBA.
“I was born and raised in Southern California,” explains Kouwabunpat (pronounced “Kowa-Boon-Pat”). “I was offered a full scholarship to Stanford to compete on the women’s golf team and that’s how I’m making my living right now.”
Even though she’s a California native, Kim, 28, spends a considerable amount of time in the Houston area. Her agent, Dave Lee, is based here, and she enjoys teeing it up at some of the area’s golf courses when she’s here.

THE LONG ROAD
Our veteran running coach looks back at the modern history of the sport
Running has come a long way since Frank Shorter won the gold medal in the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. That was the official beginning of the U.S. running boom, and even though I was not a runner just yet, I do remember what was unfolding at that time.
We had two American running heroes: Frank Shorter and Bill Rodgers. Rodgers won the New York City Marathon and the Boston Marathon four times each. They were running icons, each with his own line of running clothing. Nobody knew what a Kenyan was back then.
