Houston green consultant and owner of Designs for Success Lura Lovestar offers these tips to help you become more eco-conscious at home or at the office.

  • Recycle plastic and paper grocery store bags. Use them to line your small trash cans around the house or for packing when you move or put things in storage.

  • When shopping for only a few things, tell the cashier “no thanks” when she asks if you prefer paper or plastic.

  • Keep a cloth bag or netted shopping bag in your car.

  • When you get to-go containers from a restaurant, clean and save them to re-use for multiple purposes.

  • Buy less plastic by choosing carefully and buying more glass, pottery and China.

  • At the office, bring your own cup or glass, put your name on it, and don’t use paper or Styrofoam cups whenever possible.

  • Buy more cotton and other organic fabrics whenever possible. Avoid cheap synthetics that contain toxic dyes.

  • Look for local food markets that offer a variety of organic, free range and grass fed beef items.
