Go Red Houston
GRFW_H_CMYK_3CSG_2SPCardiovascular diseases, including stroke, are
our nation's number one killer. Since 1963, in an effort to urge Americans to join the battle against these diseases, Congress has required the president to proclaim February as “American Heart Month.”

The American Heart Association (AHA) works with the administration to draft and sign this annual proclamation. During American Heart Month, thousands of volunteers, AHA staff members and local communities band together to increase awareness, prevention and raise funds to fight heart disease and stroke. The Houston Division of the American Heart Association hosts numerous events and awareness initiatives each February. Here’s an overview of events and programs taking place this month in the Greater Houston area.

Heart Health Forever

Some key messages for women to keep in mind this month:
• Heart disease is the number one killer of women age 20 and over, killing approximately one woman every minute.
• More women die of cardiovascular disease than the next five causes of death combined, including all forms of cancer.
• While one in 30 American women die of breast cancer, about one in three die from cardiovascular disease.
• Ninety percent of women have one or more risk factors for developing heart disease.
• Eighty percent of cardiac events in women may be prevented if they make the right choices for their hearts, involving diet, exercise and abstinence from smoking.

Join the Go Red Crowd
• Research shows that women who “Go Red” are more likely to make healthy choices.
For example:
• More than one-third have lost weight
• Nearly 55 percent have increased their amount of exercise
• Six out of 10 have changed their diets
• More than 40 percent have checked their cholesterol levels
• One third have talked with their doctors about developing heart health plans
