Valerie-Belcher-FEFor years, doctors have been preaching the importance of staying fit and healthy as you get older, especially after the age of 50. Valerie Belcher is a firm believer. In fact, she could very well be one of the fittest 50-year-old women in Houston. Not only does she devote two hours a day, four days a week to working out at the gym, but she also participates in other athletic activities on a daily basis to supplement her training and for sheer enjoyment.

A member of Bally Total Fitness since 1978, Belcher began working out religiously in 1983 after graduating college. Her morning gym sessions include a half hour of calisthenics followed by weight training.

“I think it’s important for girls and women to workout regularly because it’s good for strengthening bones, and it makes you stronger,” she said. “As you get older, your bones need to be strengthened, and, especially for women in their 50s, it helps to prevent osteoporosis. It’s good for your cardiovascular system, it develops muscles and it keeps you looking toned and lean so you don’t get flabby.”

In addition to gym workouts, Belcher, who stands an even 5’, often runs at Memorial Park, rides a stationary bike at home, practices archery and goes horseback riding with her 15-year-old daughter Kristi. She trained to compete in the Chevron Houston Marathon in 2009, but had to drop out of the race more than halfway through after suffering an injury. Belcher has also participated in a sprint triathlon and twice in the BP MS 150 bike tour.

Belcher’s enthusiasm and passion for staying fit is something she tries to pass along to family, friends and co-workers. She’s even helped friends begin training programs.

“Building a workout routine is something I try to encourage because it just makes you feel healthy and it’s a nice stress reducer. I’ve done some personal training on the side whenever someone asks me to help them, and I’ve found that working out is generally something people are afraid to do. For some reason, they’re afraid to develop muscle. But the fact is you need to. The more muscle you have, the faster your metabolism will be.”

For Belcher, working out is also about injury prevention. “One of the main things I like to do is stretch. It keeps everything else healthy, it keeps your joints loose and flexible, and you’re less prone to injury and health problems.”

Outside of staying fit, Belcher works as a webmaster for a local church and enjoys spending time with her husband of 20 years and their two daughters, ages 18 and 15. And as much as her intense workouts keep her busy every day, Belcher said she is looking forward to adding something new to her long list of athletic activities.

“My goal in 2009 was to do the marathon, and I got halfway there until I had the injury at mile 15. My goal for this year is to try tae kwon do. I’ve never done that kind of activity, so it’s something different for me to try.”
